はじめに

パブリックスクール59の歴史へようこそ。このウェブページは、後にPS59ビークマンヒルインターナショナルスクールとなる学校の歴史的記録です。この歴史は包括的なものではありませんが、ニューヨーク市で最も優れた小学校の正確な記録を提供するよう努めています。新聞記事、ウェブページのアーカイブ、ニューヨーク市立図書館など、さまざまな一次史料および二次史料を使用して、当校の歴史の3つの異なる時期の年表を作成しました。

 

パブリック・スクール59の歴史」の中で、思い出の小道を歩くことを楽しんでいただければ幸いです。

パート1
謙虚な始まり

1872 - 1956

財団

1872年11月4日、マンハッタン・パブリック・スクール59が正式に設立される。

東57丁目に面した元の校地は1868年に購入された。当初の校舎は総額82,361ドル、2024年のドル換算で約1,912,000ドルで建設された。

学校名

パブリック・スクール59は、ルイザ・リー・シューリヤー・スクール（Louisa Lee Schulyer School）と名付けられ、慈善活動と米国初の看護学校設立で知られるニューヨークの著名人にちなんでいる。彼女はアレクサンダー・ハミルトンの曾孫でもある！

ニュースメディア

第一次世界大戦と戦間期を通じて、パブリック・スクール59に関する記述が印刷物として流通し始めた。この記事は、パブリック・スクール59のかつての "角の警官"、トーマス・F・ドゥーガンが、アメリカ海軍のために戦っている間に、偶然にも彼の前任地の生徒たちから届いたケアパッケージを受け取ったことを記述している。

1939/1940年の冬

写真記録

1939年末か1940年初頭、イースト57丁目にあるパブリック・スクール59の校舎を撮影した地租写真。カメラはほぼ南に向けられている。


1908年と1939/40年の写真の間に隣接する建物が撤去され、元のガス街灯が新しい「ビショップ・クルック」スタイルの電気街灯に交換されている。

1947 - 1950

略歴

パブリック・スクール59で学校に通うことがどのようなものであったのか、私たちが初めて文書で知るのはこの時期のことである：

 

1947年にノルウェーからニューヨークに来てから、2年生の最後の数週間（英語はほんの数単語しか知らなかった）に入学したのが、この古いPS59だった。 3年生の担任はグラント先生、4年生はフリン先生、5年生はグリーンワルド先生でした。 木工教室や、フレンチトーストやホットシリアル、パンケーキなどの朝食の作り方を習う料理教室があり、目の見えない子や耳の聞こえない子がそれぞれの教室に通っていたのを覚えています。 私は英語を学ぶのがとても早かった。

​

男子用と女子用に入り口が分かれていて、ドアが開くまで外で並んで待っていた。 座席はすべて一列に固定されていた。 4年生になると、机のインク入れにインクを入れ、羽ペンで練習した。

​

ある日、オープンカーに乗ったハリー・S・トルーマン大統領の車列が、まだ高架電車が走っていた3番街に向かって通り過ぎるとき、生徒全員が外の歩道で手を振って歓声を上げた。

​

机の下や廊下にしゃがみこんで、原爆攻撃に対する航空訓練を何度もやった。

​

トイレに行くときは、黒板消しを持っていかなければならなかった。

近隣地図

この地図は、土木設計会社G.W.ブロムリー＆カンパニーがニューヨーク市のために作成したもので、元の校舎が取り壊される数年前のパブリック・スクール59の周辺の様子を示している。


1879年から1901年にかけて建設された旧法の「ダンベル」長屋、たくさんのガレージ、ウールワース、ニッカーボッカー・アイス社、N.Y.テレフォン社などの廃業したビジネスがあることに注目してほしい。1955年から1956年にかけては、パブリック・スクール59の校舎も最後の日を迎えた。

1958 - 1959

新社屋、名称

1958年は、PS59の2番目の校舎の最初の学年である。

​

1959年、パブリック・スクール59は、近くの歴史的なビークマン家の地所にちなんで「ビークマン・ヒル・スクール」と改称される。

1980

写真記録

1980年、イースト57丁目とセカンド・アベニューの交差点。手前の7階建ての大きなビルは、旧美術デザイン高校のキャンパス。


これは、1980年のニューヨーク市の地租調査の一環として撮影された、パブリック・スクール59の第2校舎に関する最古の記録写真である。

13 2005年2月

学校ニュース

元PS59校長のアデル・シュレーター氏（2002-2023年）は、2007年末、PS59の移転について、今はなき学校のニュースレターにインタビューに応じている。なお、新校舎（現校舎）への移転スケジュールは、最終的に2012-2013年度まで延期された。

 

[インタビュアー］ - 新校舎はどのようなものになるのでしょうか？

 

Sさん-いくつか違う点があります。学校の中に入ると、57丁目ではなく56丁目になります。正面には大きな窓があり、ガラス張りになります。[新しい学校を建てるときはいつも、アーティストのインスタレーションを設置するんだ。壁にモザイクをかけたり、特別なタイルで縁取りをしたりすることもある。生徒たちもそれに参加することになる。

 

[インタビュアー］ - 新しい学校の名前は何になりますか？

 

Sさん 「大きな変化があったときに、新しい名前をつけるというのは面白いアイデアですね。私たちはおそらくインターナショナル・スクールを使うことになるでしょう。

2008年夏

写真記録

Googleストリートビューが捉えた、取り壊し直前のPS59第2校舎の最後の写真。
2008-2009年度、2009-2010年度、2010-2011年度、2011-2012年度の4年間、PS59は東67丁目の旧マンハッタン眼耳咽頭病院跡地に移転した。

ps59.netのウェブページは、過去に何度も変更、更新、全面的な見直しが行われてきた。2010年のこのバージョンは、PS59が東63丁目の仮校舎で運営されていたときに生徒、保護者、職員が見たであろうものを反映している。

2011年7月

写真記録

2011年夏、この画像は、完成から1年も経っていないPS59/P169/HS A&Dの新キャンパスの様子である。

画像の左下にある仮設の搬入ドック／カーポートは、最終的にPS 59へのゲート付き出入り口となる。

この象徴的な黄色の壁画は、PS59の新校舎の門を入ると、訪問者、生徒、職員が最初に目にするものである。生徒、アーティスト、スタッフの共同作業によるこのユニークな作品は、私たちのコミュニティのあらゆる側面に具現化されている喜び、多様性、成功を表現しています。

ニュースリール映像

PS59は、2016年の総選挙で当時のトランプ候補の投票所となったことで、再び大統領選の歴史に触れることになった。ニューヨーク・タイムズ』紙のリンク先の動画は、ドナルド、イヴァナ、メラニア・トランプが全員投票した地下の体育館から、投票の順番を外で待つ地元の人々の厳しい非難まで、その出来事を記録している。


この選挙で勝利したものの、当時の未来の大統領は地元ニューヨークを61％の大差で失うことになる。

現在

写真記録

パブリック・スクール59の曲がりくねった歴史は、ここで終わることはない。むしろ、PS59ファミリーの一員であるすべての人々にとって、数え切れないほどのチャンスと可能性へと道は開かれているのだ。

​

建物だけでなく、インク壺や机、コンピューターでもない、マンハッタンのパブリック・スクール59の歴史は、次世代の国際人を育てるコミュニティの物語なのだ。
